microduct for fiber optic cable

Microduct is a new system, which consists of small and flexible plastic pipes unique to fiber optic cables installation. Over the last few years microduct technology has gained popularity significantly as a result of its many advantages compared to traditional conduit systems. Microducts are used in groups of four, six or twelve thus making them relevant to all the routing options above building level or inside duct work/ underground conduits. The microducts have different diameters and are made by a range of materials so they can work with many types of fiber (Figure 2).

Utilities have so few opportunities to get optimal placement for installing fiber optic cable using the microduct.

Microduct allows for better bandwidth utilizationOne of the biggest advantages in deploying micro ducts over traditional fiber optic cable installation methods is that it enables CLECs to achieve maximum possible use-case. Microducts have small diameters, which make it easier and quicker to install, as they can fit through more spaces without the need for invasive removal of other utility lines. Because of this flexibility, fiber optic cables can be placed where coaxial or Ethernet never have gone before making them ideal for older buildings and densely populated urban areas. In addition, microduct systems are capable of being readily expanded or upgraded so that network bandwidth can be improved upon without having to completely replace the infrastructure.
